Description
This image captures a great blue heron grabbing a bite to eat from the Sacramento River in Redding California, USA on a beautiful autumn day.
The area known at Turtle Bay just downstream of the famous Sundial Bridge is a beautiful stretch of river with a very diverse wildlife population, including a nesting pair of bald eagles known as Liberty and Guardian. Liberty has nested there consistently for over a decade now and Guardian is her third mate. There are several well maintained paved trails through the park that are well used by local folks to walk, jog, and bike through a bit of nature’s beauty in the middle of their town.
Great blue herons (Ardea Herodias) ) are a large wading bird that is very commonly seen along shallow shorelines of North and South America as well as other parts of the world. They have a voracious appetite for small fish, invertibrates, small reptiles and even small mammals like mice at times. If you’ve ever been walking along and startled one it’s quite likely it startled you back as they can certainly let out quite a racket as they voice their displeasure!
