Description
Eagle Lake in Lassen County California is one of my “home lakes.” It is a very large endorheic basin with a catchment area of some 24000 acres. The trout years of the early part of our 21st century have really dropped the water levels to the point that for a time I couldn’t see water from places I stood and caught trout in the 1990’s. Fortunately, it’s seen a bit of recovery since then, especially in the wet winter of 2022/2023. When water levels are where they should be the shallow edges of much of the lake have marshy areas with thick tules (large reeds – some folks call them bulrush too, I believe). It’s been a few years since I’ve seen the tules growing on the water’s edge but I’m very happy to say that in 2023 there are many thick patches where I am historically used to seeing them. This bodes well for aquatic life in the lake including but not limited to the iconic Eagle Lake rainbow trout strain that can grow quite large feeding on the small crustaceans and invertebrates that thrive in the tules.
The tules, being fast growing foliage, also contain a great deal of chlorophyll which helps them to reflect near infrared light wonderfully. I captured this image on the south shore of the lake in direct 1pm sun on a balmy 100 degree July afternoon with my full spectrum modified camera fitted with an 830 nanometer “deep infrared” filter.
