Description
Iβm not sure what this old structure in northern Lassen County California is. Iβm guessing it is either an old shepherdβs shack or a cowboy line shack. The area that itβs in has been used for both sheep and cattle grazing for many years. On this early June afternoon I was out for a drive looking for a good spot to get out ahead of some in coming thunderstorms and thought of this building which Iβve known about for years. This composition lines it up nicely with Shaffer Mountain, the highest peak in the distance, which happens to have a bunch of big repeater towers atop it. I figured that made it a good candidate for a lighting image. I saw some impressive bolts but never got any of the biggest ones in the frame. Still, the sky was wonderfully dramatic and I think the distant bolt in this image still adds a layer of interest to the scene.
To complete the story, imagine the sounds of a strong wind through high desert foliage along with wild burros braying their discontent at the storm off to the right and cattle mooing their own discontent off to the left but not another human to be seen. It was definitely an evening of rural America at its finest.

Mike, oh wow, I love the story about how you actually got the photograph as much as the picture itself. I am captivated just looking at the picture and thinking of the gloomy thundering atmosphere surrounding you (including the cattle). Fabulous piece.
