Description

Railroad tracks into the sunset. Taken in the high desert at Flanigan, Nevada.

Flanigan, Nevada is a remote, unincorporated community in Washoe County near the California-Nevada border. It sits in the eastern portion of the Smoke Creek Desert and is known today mostly as a ghost town. Flanigan began in the early 1900s as a railroad junction for the Western Pacific and Nevada-California-Oregon railroads. It was named after Patrick L. Flanigan, a wealthy rancher and politician. Today, it consists of a few scattered ranch buildings and wide-open high desert landscape.
