While driving west on State Route 44 in Lassen County California USA very early on an August morning I noticed some fog as I started to approach an area known as the Bogard Flats. At first, I thought it must be smoke from a wildfire that was burning to the northwest as fog isn’t a normal thing for that area in summer (although it is quite common in the colder months). This area sort of a high valley sitting very close to 6000 feet above sea level. The day before this image was captured strong thunderstorms had hit the area and clearly dropped a pretty significant amount of precipitation as there were actually a few standing puddles to be seen when I got off the road. I had no intention of shooting the sunrise that morning but sort of felt like I had to try since I’m pretty much hooked on shooting in the fog. I drove up a forest service dirt road until I found some trees off in the distance toward where the sun was going to rise. Using a telephoto lens to sort of “compress” several stands of trees together in nice layers in the fog this image was the result when that sky absolutely caught fire as the sun began to rise!

I opted for a 16:9 (wide screen) crop on this image to best fit the scene and give it a bit of a "panoramic" feel.
