Description
Anyone who’s followed my photography at all knows I’m enamored with old irrigation wheel lines. They’ve been a part of my local landscape here in Lassen County, California, USA for many years and just have a wonderfully “rural” look about them. Lots of the older ones are being replaced with bigger rubber tired units that just don’t have the same “rustic” feel to them but I guess that’s progress.
I’ve driven by this “bone yard” of old segments in a nearby field for some time and always wanted to do something photographically artistic with them. I got my chance during a period of freezing fog, or as the Shoshones called it, 𝘱𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘩 (Americanized to “pogonip”). The cold fog had persisted for a a few days at this point leading to a thick buildup of hoar frost on the grasses and brush while the ground was still white from a recent snow. I think the icy conditions, dry grasses, and rusty old parts tell a good story, albeit a somewhat sad one.

Great find here, leaves so much to wonder about history of those wheels. Beautiful capture!

Outstanding presentation, Mike! The high key really emphasizes the vintage nature of the photograph. l/f
