The Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley National Park are a popular tourist stop. Indeed, on this trip we passed by several times and saw numerous hikers throughout the sandy mounds. However, on this particular morning the wind was blowing hard as an overnight storm was moving out of the area. This had the dust kicked up significantly across the entire valley, especially the dunes. The scene looked rather surreal through a telephoto lens. The long focal length “compressed” the distant snow capped mountains closer to the dunes and the dust provided and almost foggy mood, filtering the late morning light and softening the entire scene.

I've appreciated fine photography of all types for as long as I remember. I suspect it is at least partially hereditary as my parents met while each was involved in photographic pursuits for the US Navy (mom in the darkroom and dad in the field).
