Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park is one of the area’s most famous and breathtaking viewpoints. Formed from ancient Furnace Creek Lake sediments, this dramatic badlands terrain has been sculpted over thousands of years by erosion, creating an almost otherworldly landscape. It remains a favorite sunrise and sunset destination, offering sweeping views of the undulating ridges, layered rock formations, and the vast valley floor framed by distant mountains.

On this particular morning, my wife and I arrived before dawn, anticipating a spectacular sunrise. A thin deck of high clouds overhead seemed ideally positioned to catch and reflect the early morning hues. However, as luck would have it, the only low clouds in the area were positioned directly over the eastern ridgeline, blocking the sun’s emergence and muting the colors we had hoped for.
