Artist's Description
This image captures a parhelion, commonly known as a “sun dog” viewed from atop Pilot Butte in Bend Oregon.
Pilot Butte is an ancient, now dormant, cinder cone volcano which now serves as a scenic viewpoint managed by the Oregon State Parks Service. From atop this hill one is treated to some pretty stunning views in all distances, especially to the west toward the Deschutes Naitonal forest with its majestic volcanic peaks.
A parhelion is a phenomenon that results from the refraction of light through the ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. They can frequently be seen in pairs and this one, to the south side of the sun was indeed coupled with one to the north side. This one wasn’t over near as striking of a landscape as its mate so I decided to shoot it at a telephoto focal length for a simple, more minimalistic image of the colors and the wonderful clouds surrounding them.
About Mike Lee
First of all, thank you for stopping by my little gallery. Whether you're a fellow artist, potential buyer, or a casual observer, I'm glad something made you want to take a look at my work. Since my first instant film camera as an adolescent, I've always had a passion for photography and a real appreciation for what goes in to making a truly fine image. In 2018 I was able to retire from a professional career that provided a good livelihood for my family but, if I'm honest, left much to be...
