Waves crash into the rugged shoreline rocks near Newport, Oregon, at Yaquina Head on a moody, cloudy autumn afternoon.
Yaquina Head, a striking headland extending into the Pacific Ocean, is home to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area and Oregonβs tallest lighthouse. Built in 1872, the 93-foot-tall Yaquina Head Lighthouse still operates today, guiding ships along the coast.
This coastal region is rich in marine life, with tide pools teeming with sea stars, anemones, and mussels. Harbor seals often lounge on the rocks, while gray whales can be spotted migrating offshore at certain times of the year. The cliffs also provide nesting grounds for peregrine falcons, bald eagles, and common murres, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching.
Newport itself is known for its fishing industry and is home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where Keiko, the famous orca from Free Willy, once lived. The nearby Hatfield Marine Science Center, affiliated with Oregon State Univ...
