Description
The steamer Mary D. Hume was built in 1881 in Gold Beach Oregon (then known as Ellensburg) by R. D. Hume, an Oregon pioneer and businessman. During her long career she hauled cargo between Oregon and San Francisco. She then served as a whaler, service vessel, and tugboat in Alaska. Upon her ultimate retirement in 1977 she was returned to Gold Beach where she ultimately sank in 1985 and her derelict carcass remains to this day.
I’ve seen her a number of times as a fairly frequent visitor to Gold Beach but conditions have never been on my side for a photo. When my wife and I were there on this foggy October day I decided to give it a go. In those conditions I had my mind on a sort of a minimalistic “fine art” image. I shot full minute long exposures to remove the ripple off the water and soften the scene. The fog wasn’t quite thick enough to conceal the distracting background clutter along the north jetty on the other side so I removed it in Photoshop to isolate the wonderful old wreck. I’ll probably do a black and white version of this image at some point but I left this one color as I think the subtle tones of the faded old paint along with the moss on the gunnels add a nice “vibe.”
This version of the image is cropped to a 16:9 (widescreen or HDTV) aspect ratio. It is also available in a more traditional 2X3/4X6 crop elsewhere in my gallery.

WOW, what a fabulous shot of this whaler. The "perfect conditions" really add a little mystery and intrigue. Very well done.

still love it. Actually I would love to see it close up too. With all the bits and pieces, possibly messy? Humor me and let me see, haha.
