Artist's Description
A family member of mine has a ranch with a seasonal pond in Shasta County, California, with some old willow trees in it. He keeps a wood duck nest box in one of those willows and has had decent success helping the “woodies” raise a clutch most years. I get down that way fairly infrequently, so I’ve yet to be there with an opportunity to get that epic shot of a male. However, on this spring 2025 afternoon, my son and I were riding around the ranch in decent late afternoon light when momma woodie was swimming around with the kids, so I felt compelled to grab a shot.
Wood ducks are among the most colorful and unique waterfowl in North America. Unlike most ducks, they nest in tree cavities—often high above ground—and newly hatched ducklings leap from the nest just a day after hatching, bouncing unharmed on the forest floor or water below. Hens may lay eggs in other females' nests, a behavior known as "nest parasitism." Wood ducks prefer wooded swamps, marshes, and slow-mov...
