This image captures the striking striations in packed sand on the edge of the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes in the Oregon desert. I captured the photo while stretching my legs on the drive south, heading back to my “home base” in Northern California. I was quite struck by the textures created by wind erosion on the sand’s edge. Indeed, I felt like I was chewing on a bit of said sand for about the next 20 miles when I got back in my car, as the wind was blowing it around quite a bit while I was there. Properly protected from the sandblasting, I could have spent hours there losing myself in the lines and textures.

On this day, a low-pressure system was on its way out, and there were still sporadic rain showers in the area, making for a dramatic and moody sky.

The Christmas Valley dunes are a very popular destination for the off-highway vehicle crowd and span some 11,000 acres, starting several miles north of Lake Abert on US Highway 395.
