Description
I captured this frame in the Smoke Creek Desert in Lassen County California during the early part of the “golden hour” late on a springtime afternoon. I honestly don’t know what made these tracks. They very well could be fairly modern. However, they are fairly wide and fairly deeply rutted and fairly well grown over with grass and weeds so it’s not at all impossible these were left by wagons in the 19th century. This area is part of what has become known as the Noble Immigrant Trail.
The Noble Emigrant Trail was a key wagon route used by pioneers traveling west during the mid-19th century. Blazed in 1852 by William H. Noble, this trail provided an alternative to the rough and water-scarce Carson and Applegate routes, offering a more direct path from the Humboldt River in Nevada to Northern California. It was particularly favored by emigrants aiming for the fertile lands of the Sacramento Valley.
The trail entered California near the Smoke Creek Desert, crossing the rugged terrain of the Madeline Plains before descending into the Lassen area. Unlike some other emigrant routes, the Noble Trail avoided extreme mountain passes, making it an attractive—though still challenging—option for wagon trains.
Despite its promise, the route was not without hardships. Travelers faced long stretches of dry desert, difficult volcanic rock formations, and occasional conflicts with Native American tribes. By the late 19th century, as railroads expanded, the trail fell into disuse. Today, traces of the Noble Trail can still be found in remote areas of Lassen County, with old wagon ruts, trail markers, and occasional emigrant artifacts serving as a testament to the thousands who passed through on their journey west.

So evocative. You can feel the wide-open space, the tension between beauty and mystery.
