Description
I’m enamored with the Milky Way core. I’m enamored with stumps on lake shores. Naturally, when I camp at a lake in a dark sky location, and that lake has stumps all around it, I’m going to see if I can put the two together. This stump caught my eye as I took a short stroll from camp on our first day in camp at Minersville on Trinity Lake (Trinity County California, USA). I decided to use it as foreground interest for a night sky image since the finger of lake in the background went roughly the right direction for a composition with the galactic core. As it was very close to the new moon, I knew I wouldn’t have sufficient light on the lake when the stars were out and I wanted to include it in the shot. Therefore, I set my camera up during the “blue hour” when there was still some subtle illumination on the lake and captured a frame. I then left the camera in place and went back to camp until full “astro darkness” a couple hours later. I captured a series of sky frames using my normal technique and a few frames of the stump that I “light painted” with a handheld flashlight. All images were then blended together in post production to create the final image.
