Description
This is a large rainbow trout being released back in to Eagle Lake in Lassen County, California, USA after it was caught by an angler.
Eagle Lake, with its catchment area of some 24,000 acres, is the second largest natural lake that is entirely within the state of California, behind only Clear Lake in Lake County. The alkalinity of the ancient body of water is quite high, reducing the species of fish that can thrive in it. The native tui chub are abundant and the Eagle Lake strain of Rainbow Trout (𝘖𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘮𝘺𝘬𝘪𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘶𝘮) is hearty in these conditions and grows quite large on a diet of the chubs and abundant small crustaceans in the lake.
Famous for the large trout, the lake draws anglers from far and near with the fall season generally providing the best opportunity to catch them as they chase the chubs in to the shallows when the lake cools.
Scores of cherished memories have been created on this wonderful body of water including many shared by my son and me.
