Description
Golden Canyon in Death Valley National Park is a favorite among hikers, offering a winding path through towering rock formations that narrow and expand unpredictably. With breathtaking views around every bend, the canyon provides multiple routes leading to different scenic destinations. On this crisp January day, my wife and I set out on a hike to Red Cathedral, a dramatic overlook offering a stunning perspective of the rugged terrain and distant valley. Depending on which guide or trail marker you believe, the round-trip distance from the Badwater side varies between 2.5 and 3.5 miles, depending on which sign or brochure you believe my wifes step counter leaned toward the latter.
The final stretch of the ascent becomes quite narrow and slightly technical, though it remains manageable for most hikerswe certainly wouldnt call ourselves mountaineers! The reward at the top is this breathtaking view, looking back toward Badwater Basin. This panoramic image captures the grandeur of the landscape, though Ill note that the visible trail in the foreground isnt the one we tooktheres a safer, less intimidating route just out of frame. The one pictured involves an aging ladder and a bit of tricky scrambling at the other end, adding an extra layer of adventure for those who seek it!
