Description
I went up to Eagle Lake (Lassen County, California, USA) on a late July afternoon to take a walk and watch the birds. Several terns were flitting around as they do, occasionally diving to grab a minnow out of the water. Someday, I’ll photograph that moment one hits the water but I’m always happy just to get a frame of one in focus since they fly quite fast and erratically. I caught this one flying west as its head was bathed in the last bit of golden sunshine.
Full disclosure: this image is from two frames. The bird did indeed fly by that sky a second or two before I captured it but by the time I got this frame of the bird it had moved to less interesting sky so I took the liberty of doing a 2 second “time blend.”

The low angle of the golden hour light on the Tern's face is a real winner and brings out the bird's details mid-flight! The cloud blend does help fill the image well. Excellent work, Mike!
