Artist's Description
I captured this image of a field of baled hay near my home in Lassen County, California, using my full-spectrum modified camera fitted with a 590-nanometer near-infrared filter. This filter allows the red-orange end of the visible light spectrum to pass through along with the near-infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The resulting images come out of the camera very reddish, but with post-production—such as swapping the red and blue color channels—a surreal and dreamlike scene emerges. This type of photography excels when the sun is high in the sky, conditions not normally suited for traditional visible light photography.
In the distance, the shimmering water is Honey Lake, the namesake of Honey Lake Valley. This seasonal lake expands and contracts throughout the year, shaping the landscape and supporting diverse wildlife in this rural region of northeastern California that I'm happy to call home.
