Description
This image was captured at sunset near Miner’s Point on Eagle Lake in Lassen County, California, USA. This was the first sunset I’d even seen in at least a couple months due to the wildfires that have ravaged our area in the summer of 2021. It was wonderful to get out and have some solitude and, most of all, some clean air to breathe, even if the tones in the distant sky are admittedly helped along but smoke from the Dixie Fire that was still burning in Shasta County to the west.
Eagle Lake sits at a surface elevation of just over 5,000 feet above sea level. It is among the largest natural lakes in California with a catchment area of some 21,500 acres. It is home to a trophy strain of rainbow trout that anglers often travel great distances to catch. It also supports many species of water fowl as well as raptors including bald eagles and osprey. I consider it my “home” lake as I’ve spent a great deal of time there and made many wonderful memories from fishing with my son or friends to just getting in a few hours of solitude as was the case on this evening (although, by September my boy and I are pondering the fishing which usually starts to get good in October).
