Description
This image captures an old stump and some exposed rocks in Blue Lake (Lassen County, California, USA). I captured the image at blue hour, that magical time after the sun has gone down but is still less than 20 degrees below the horizon. I used a very long shutter opening to ensure the water was perfectly flat to create a simple, minimalistic image. The light this particular evening was even more unique courtesy of smoke from wild fire activity that has become all too common in the region. Indeed, I hoped to shoot a Milky Way nightscape later in the evening but the smoke was too thick for that to pan out. I was still blessed to come away with an image and it was a very peaceful at lakeside as I watched numerous bats silhouetted in the fading light as they flitted over the lake hunting the insects that keep them well fed.
Blue Lake, at the extreme northern end of Lassen County, is one of my favorite places. Since Ive moved past the regimented daily grind I can visit on week days when it is extremely quiet due to its fairly remote location. Truth be told, there are probably 40+ sites in the Forest Service campground there and I wonder if it has ever totally filled, even on big weekends. The fact that cellular service doesnt reach there is only an added bonus.
