Description
While on one of our great father-son fishing trips my boy hooked a small trout in Baum Lake (Shasta County, California, USA). As he tried to reel the fish in to release it, the fish got a bit of an extra roller-coaster ride courtesy of an osprey that had been observing the scene from a nearby tree for a time. As I was trying to get shots of jumping trout as my boy reeled them in, I had the camera aimed and focused to just about the right spot to capture the scene unfold. This frame was caught right as the bird released its brief grasp on the fish, presumably due to the tension on the fishing line. Aside from a small nick near the fishβs tail, it was unharmed and swam away, presumably to tell its friends not to eat the gold spinny thingies.

Mike, I love the tale and the fact that the trout got away. Silly me. A great picture of course.

LOL...thank you...the boy did take one nice one for the table that day but that was all he needed. This little guy had a rough enough day already π π π

LOL What a story! And what a fantastic in action capture!! Super fabulous photography my friend, and I love that the fish got away. I love to fish myself but always throw them back. I know with the bird, it's nature's way and all that, but sometimes it's hard to watch!
Mike Lee replied:
Thank you, Sharon! We release the vast majority too, although my boy likes one for the table on occasion.
