Description
Snow geese migrate through my home area of Lassen County California on both their northern and southern migrations. While we don’t get nearly the flocks of tens of thousands of birds that some of the areas more famous for these migrations are known for, it’s not uncommon to see groups of over a thousand birds resting in some of the rural fields around the county. This is especially true near Honey Lake, the large endorheic sink that forms the bottom of the Honey Lake Valley in which much of the county sits. On this day I saw a flock of several hundred, perhaps a thousand birds, in a hay field and stopped to grab a few shots. After a few minutes, this large group decided to relocate and took to the air. I thought it was quite nice of them to do so in a direction that let me capture them in profile as opposed to when they fly off because they’re scared of me and I just get a few thousand goose butts in the frame (which can still be fairly impressive).
