Ever wonder how cattails get planted? I’m sure this isn’t THE way but it’s most certainly A way that it happens. I spotted this male red-winged blackbird on a cattail at the Fleming Unit of the Honey Lake Wildlife Area near my home in Lassen County California. The scene was beautifully backlit at about 5:30pm on a slightly breezy late February afternoon so I felt compelled to grab a shot.
The Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) is one of North America’s most widespread and recognizable birds, known for the males’ striking black plumage with vibrant red and yellow shoulder patches. These birds thrive in wetlands, marshes, and grasslands, often seen perching on reeds and cattails while delivering their distinctive, conk-la-ree song. Males are highly territorial during the breeding season, fiercely defending their nesting areas against intruders.
