Description
This image features the mighty Pit River in Shasta County on an early autumn afternoon as the foliage was just beginning to change colors. A small storm system was moving in and the light was changing rapidly. I caught this image as the sun just broke out from behind a cloud and cast a warm glow on the entire scene.
Very near where this image was captured is the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) company’s Pit 1 Powerhouse, the first of 7 power houses on the Pit River between Fall River Mills California and Shasta Lake. The biggest impoundment by far in the system is Lake Britton which is held back by the Pit 3 Dam and is the site of the railroad trestle where a young Will Wheaton and his fellow cast members ran from a train in the iconic movie Stand By Me.
The Pit River drainage is home to a diverse amount of fish and wildlife and hosts a great deal of recreational opportunities in some beautiful, if often rugged, country.
