Description
The Pit River is the longest tributary of the Sacramento River. It’s main stem is just over 200 miles long with some of its water traveling as much as 265 miles before meeting the Sacramento River (or, more accurately today, the Sacramento Arm of Shasta Lake just north of Redding California).
As it passes through it’s lower portion in Shasta County the terrain gets quite steep. Taking advantage of the rapid descent, a total of 7 dams divert water for hydroelectric generation. With a capacity of some 770 megawatts, the project generates approximately 3.67 billion kilowatts per annum, or roughly 13 percent of the electricity used in the state of California.
By far the largest of these dams is Pit 3, which holds back Lake Britton near McCarthur-Burney Falls State Park. It was atop this dam, over which travels Clark Creek Road, that I captured this image looking downriver on a moody November morning.

Another breathtaking shot from your beautiful gallery, Mike! This is a great image for home or office. The State of California should put this in all their tourism brochures.
