Description
This image captures an old outhouse that sits near the base of the Mills Peak fire lookout in Plumas County, California, above the community of Graeagle. Built in 1933 and restored in 2005, the lookout plays a vital role in wildfire prevention and early suppression. A few of these historic lookouts I’ve been to have similar old wooden outhouses nearby. I’m not sure if they’re still in use, but I hope modern staffers have more updated options.
It was nearly noon when I arrived at this location, and the high sun was directly illuminating the needles of the trees. To capture the scene in a unique way, I chose to shoot this with my full-spectrum modified camera fitted with an 830-nanometer infrared cut filter. The result is a surreal, high-contrast landscape where the foliage appears almost luminous against a darkened sky, emphasizing the timeless, rugged charm of this remote location.
