Description
This image captures a river otter right after it emerged from the water on Lake Almanor in Plumas County, California, USA. I’d been on a quest to get a good image of one since I became aware of at least 4 of them in this area of open water between large expanses of ice. Having watched them for several sessions I believed I had a good idea for a place to set up in late afternoon light and the animal here did not disappoint. As I laid still against the rocks dressed in colors similar to the rocks it came out of the water and up the bank about as close to one as I want to be, having seen what their teeth look like. Thankfully, the animal went on about its business, disappearing into the boulders in the opposite direction of me and, given my stillness and the fact I was “up-sun” from the critter, I don’t think it ever had any idea I was there snapping its picture in the wonderful warm afternoon light.

Delightful Mike! One of my favorite animals in the wild. Watching them play in winter is so very joyful.
