On a camping trip to Eagle Lake not far from our home in Lassen County California, my wife and I were cooking breakfast when we saw this beautiful red tailed hawk land in a nearby pine tree. Shortly thereafter we started hearing a great deal of racket from a number of small birds and noticed that several of the latter were swarming the beautiful raptor as it appeared to just be trying to relax and do a bit of preening. I am not sure why the smaller birds wanted the hawk gone so badly. The obvious first guess is they had nests nearby but it was well into July so I’m not sure that was the case. It was definitely quite a show and it lasted long enough that I got this and a few more still images as well as some decent video clips.
