Description
While driving on California State Route 44 in western Lassen County early on this April 2023 morning, I noticed some nice color and high clouds off to the north east. I thought there was good potential for a pretty sunrise but in the area I first started seeing the colors there wasn’t much of a foreground (unless you like power poles). However, I got to this spot where the melting snow had flooded a field about 5 minutes before the sun was going to break the horizon. Fortunately, at that hour of the morning there is very little traffic on that highway so I all but locked up my brakes to stop on the edge of the road. I scrambled to get my camera and tripod out and set up and probably ended up with about 3 minutes of shooting time before the wonderful colors seen here started to fade and the sun rose. Sometimes in outdoor photography all the proper planning in the world still isn’t enough. However, there are those rare occasions when we’ll take just a little dumb luck (although I’d like to think I employed some skill in the capture and processing of the photo).
