Description
If you pinned me down and made me pick a favorite bird of prey, I’d probably go with the osprey. This is true even though I do a bit of angling myself and have admittedly experienced the occasional jealousy of them when they’re catching fish and I’m not. However, a quick reminder that they need the catch more than I do is all it takes to dissolve that thought.
It isn’t hard for me to lose an hour watching them expertly ply their craft. I’ve read that their success rate at catching a fish is nearly 70%. Like all raptors, one of the tools they use to achieve this is very keen eyesight. This one was intensely putting that keen vision to use when it flew by me at Baum Lake in Shasta County, California slightly backlit from the late morning sun.
