It is very common for me to hear great horned owls simply by stepping out of my door in the pre-dawn hours of my northeastern California home. It’s much less common that I get to see one of the wonderful creatures and this is the only time I’ve ever got to see one perched through a camera lens.

My son and I were about to pull in to our driveway when the big bird flew a few feet over our car and landed in this pine in my neighbor’s field. It was then decent enough to stay put long enough for me to get my camera out and grab a shot before going on about its evening business.
