The Smoke Creek Desert in northeastern California and northwestern Nevada can be a barren landscape. However, after a nice wet winter it can be incredibly beautiful in spring. On this particular mid-May evening my wife and I had been out for a drive during some thunderstorm activity. Most of the afternoon had been a bust for photos due to grey gloomy conditions. However, the last hour before dusk was absolutely incredible as the clouds opened up then colored up as the sun got low to the horizon. I captured this image near the junction of Smoke Creek road and US395 just after sunset.
