Description
Many photographers like to experiment with shutter speeds when photographing wave action on coastal beaches. I’m no exception, and while on a vacation to Harris Beach State Park near Brookings, Oregon, I made it down to the south beach several times to do some of that experimentation. I captured this image on a bit of a hazy afternoon where I’d noticed the receding waves swirling counterclockwise toward the large sea stack. With a bit of decent timing and about a second and a half of shutter opening, I got some rather nice striations in the receding water, forming a bit of a “leading line” toward the rocks. As it was indeed a rather gray day and the image is more about texture, I found what little color existed in this case actually detracted from those amazing textures, so a monochrome treatment was in order.
Harris Beach State Park, located along the striking southern Oregon coast, is known for its towering sea stacks, rugged cliffs, and dynamic wave patterns that provide endless inspiration for photographers and nature lovers alike. The park offers some of the best tide pooling in the region, revealing vibrant marine life at low tide, while its sandy stretches invite long, contemplative walks. Frequent mist and fog lend an ethereal atmosphere, and the dramatic interplay between water and rock formations makes every visit unique. Bird Island, a protected wildlife refuge just offshore, is home to rare seabirds, adding to the area's ecological significance. Whether bathed in sunlight or wrapped in the moody embrace of coastal haze, Harris Beach remains a place of raw natural beauty, perfect for creative exploration.
