Description
As of spring of 2025, there is a very easy-to-view bald eagle nest at the Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge in Siskiyou County, California. It is very near a gravel road on a levee, and authorities ask that viewers remain in their vehicles while observing the nest. While on a camping trip to the area, my wife and I pulled in one morning (morning light is best for viewing and photos due to the orientation of the nest) to take a look. Before we got to the sign with the admonishment to remain in the vehicle, I climbed in the back of the pickup to get more elevation and a better angle (hey, it counts as in the vehicle, right?). We hoped to see eaglets, but there weren’t any yet. However, I did grab this nice portrait of one of the pair sitting in the nest. I’d never say a bald eagle is capable of a “happy” face, but there was a quite chilly breeze blowing that morning and this one looks especially grumpy (although it later flew to a tree RIGHT on the edge of the road and just looked at me as we drove by and I was still in the pickup about 20 feet from it – it’s clearly figured out that people in the refuge aren’t much of a threat).
