Artist's Description
This image captures a great egret on some driftwood in Eagle Lake in Lassen County, California, USA. Egrets wade in shallower water catching small aquatic animals such as fish and frogs. They are very adept at holding perfectly still until unsuspecting prey ventures past. With a stab of the beak at a speed you’d never expect possible with that long neck they have a meal in a flash. They are also quite timid toward humans in my experience and I was fortunate to see this one before it saw me and get in a position where I was camouflaged by some reeds not terribly far away. I watched it for a time hoping to see it catch lunch but apparently it wasn’t hungry or nothing presented itself. Still, it was wonderful to just watch the beautiful creature for a time.
