Description
Great egrets are one of the more common large wading birds along the Sacramento River and they’re quite common in the Turtle Bay area in Redding California. It can be fun to watch them wade the shallows looking for small aquatic fish and invertebrates to snack on. Even though they can’t eat prey quite as large as their cousin the Great Blue Heron, it’s pretty impressive how fast they can stab that big beak in the water to grab something, as if their neck was a striking snake. Like their larger cousins they can be a bit timid of humans (at least yours truly) but I was able to get pretty close to this one as it was looking for breakfast backlit in some warm morning light.
