Artist's Description
On this January visit to Death Valley National Park, I experienced a stark contrast in temperatures—twice. Earlier in the day, I was sweating in a t-shirt down in the valley, but by the time I reached Dante’s View, perched at nearly 5,600 feet above sea level, the wind made the 40-degree temperature feel much colder. Standing on the exposed ridge, I wished I had packed an extra coat, but I braved the elements, determined to capture the shifting moods of the desert.
As I waited for the sun to set over Badwater Basin, I turned in the opposite direction and was mesmerized by a series of rain squalls sweeping rapidly across the rugged terrain. Over the course of half an hour, I captured several frames, each telling a different story of light and movement. In this particular image, I love how the distant landscape appears almost like an island, isolated in the deep shadows cast by the sun lowering in the sky to the right of the frame, while the rain moves in from the left.
