Description
On this January trip to Death Valley National Park, I felt cold twice and this afternoon/evening was the most pronounced. I was on a high ridge known as Dante’s View waiting for a sunset. The thermometer in the car said just over 40 degrees Fahrenheit but that does no justice to what it felt like with the crazy wind that was coming up over that ridgeline at almost 5600 feet above sea level. Just an hour earlier I was sweating in a tee shirt in the valley below and standing here in a heavy coat I was wishing I had TWO heavy coats on! I perservered though and grabbed a few images I’m pleased with, this being one. As I was waiting for sun to set and hopefully yield a good image of the vista over Badwater, I looked in the opposite direction and watched a series of rain squalls moving rapidly across the terrain. I shot several images of the scene over the course of half an hour or so. In this frame I like the way the distant terrain looks a bit like an island in the deep shadows cast by the sun which was getting low in the sky to camera right as one of those squalls moved through from left to right.
