Description
I took a mid October afternoon jaunt to Crater Lake (not the world famous 42.948447214292614, -122.10905862915772 Crater Lake but the lesser known 40.62546233601233, -121.04765606855645 Crater Lake).
The aspen stands along the shoreline are spectacular for a short time each autumn, although I've struggled for years to get a photo I like. As the name implies, it is a volcanic crater so it is ringed with igneous boulders that aren't the easiest to get around on and things can be tight. Last year, I tried to shoot a shot like this one from across the lake in the morning but by the time the sun got above a high peak to the east the light was too harsh. Therefore, this year I tried late afternoon and I think that worked significantly better as the terrain to the west lets the sun sink lower and actually get in to that “golden hour” outdoor photographers love before the terrain blocks it.
This little gem sits at 7000 feet above sea level so things happen quickly. These trees were almost totally green just a week before this. Luckily, this is fairly close to home for me so I can scout it with some frequency.
