Description
I captured this image of Castle Crags from Exit 723 on Interstate 5 in Shasta County, California, USA on a very moody day as one storm system was moving out ahead of another moving in.
Castle Crags is a very dramatic large rock formation that stands prominently over the area known as Castella, near Dunsmuir. It provides beautiful scenery for the drive north on Interstate 5 if the skies are clear. The terrain is made up of both sedimentary and igneous rocks (granite) and the prominent features were formed as ancient glaciations carried away looser sediment around the granite plutons that form the spires you now see.
