I captured this image on a very rainy hike in Castle Crags State Park near Castella in Shasta County, California. I was apparently the only one crazy enough to be out in the deluge, as the parking lot at the trailhead was empty when I got there, still empty when I left, and I never saw another hiker on the trail. I love how dramatic some of the rocky spires can look in stormy conditions! Many years ago, I hiked it on a bit of a rainy day armed only with a disposable camera and never forgot it, even if the pictures have since been lost. On this day, it was almost too moody, and I really struggled to find a time when those spires were even showing themselves in the low cloud deck. I guess I need to go back! This image is one of just a couple of shots I got between the shifting clouds and the challenge of keeping water off my lens. The entire scene was basically monochromatic due to the weather conditions, so I opted for a black-and-white treatment to really focus the eye on the dramatic...
