Description
This image captures striations in packed sand on the edge of the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes in the Oregon desert. I captured the photo while stretching my legs on the drive south heading back to my “home base” in Northern California. I was quite struck by textures created by the wind erosion on the edge of the sand. Indeed, I felt like I was chewing on a bit of said sand for about the next 20 miles when I got back in my car as the wind was blowing it around quite a bit while I was there. Properly protected from the sandblasting I could have spent hours there losing myself in the lines and textures though.
On this day a low pressure system was on its way out and there were still sporadic rain showers in the area and the sky was quite moody.
The Christmas Valley dunes are a very popular destination for the off highway vehicle crowd and span some 11,000 acres starting several miles north of Lake Abert on US Highway 395.

Beautifully captured, Mike! Thank you, I did not know that Oregon had a desert (maybe in some ways I did). LF

Thank you, John! Much of the eastern half of the state is very arid indeed. Reminds me a great deal of the high desert here where I live in Lassen County, California (except we don' have dunes).
