Description
This image is of a dune in the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes in the Oregon desert. I captured the photo while stretching my legs on the drive south heading back to my “home base” in Northern California. As I walked around a bit I was struck by all the wonderful lines and textures that were pretty much everywhere. If my schedule wasn’t so tight, and I wasn’t being sandblasted, I could have spent hours there lost in the scene.
On this day a low pressure system was on its way out and there were still sporadic rain showers in the area and the sky was quite moody. In this shot I got as low as my old knees would allow to try to take optimum advantage of the filtered light playing off the undulations of the sand at the edge of the dune.
The Christmas Valley dunes are a very popular destination for the off highway vehicle crowd and span some 11,000 acres starting several miles north of Lake Abert on US Highway 395.

I use to live straight up the mountain from there, one day I decided to go exploring and decided to go to Christmas Valley expecting to see a lot of Christmas trees, there were none to be found but discovered a part of Oregon that is so diverse and mysterious . beautiful capture.. the skies , the textures...
