For the vast majority of a summer day Chaos Crags in Lassen Volcanic National Park looks quite barren and stark (although it's never without some great rugged texture). The golden light just after dawn and just before dusk paints it with some stunning tones for just a few minutes each day though. I watched it for those few minutes on this September evening. About two minutes after this frame the sun dipped below the horizon and it was like someone flipped a switch and turned it back to a big gray rocky mass.
