Description
This run down old house/cabin is one of several old abandoned structures in my local area that I’m enamored with. This one is fairly challenging to get good photos of due to its position out in a privately owned field, a fair bit from the road. I caught it on this late afternoon just as the sun was about to dip below the horizon behind me. Within a minute of capturing this image, the structure was in complete shadow. I liked the way that low sun played not only off the building but off the Skedaddle Mountains several miles off in the distance. “The Skedaddles” as we know them around these parts, are a small group of mountains, the tallest of which being Hot Springs Peak, in eastern Lassen County (California USA), not too far from the Nevada line. As can be seen, they are rather stark as the area is very much high desert. However, they can have some wonderful texture about them in the right light. By shooting at a fairly long focal length (300+ millimeters), the mountains are somewhat “compressed” to the structure making them appear a bit closer than reality and anchoring the building and mountains for an image.
EDIT 2023:
I recently drove by this tired old structure and was saddened to see that it finally gave way to the high winds that sometimes blow through this area. Sadly, it is now just a pile of rubble out in the field.
