Description
My lovely bride and I took a drive to Soda Springs in Plumas County on a July 2022 afternoon. Soda Spring is an interesting little spring where water flows through calcium carbonate and fizzes at the surface, hence the name. A year earlier, pre-Dixie Fire for this area, there was quite the rookery of barn swallows nesting under the roof of gazebo type structure that was built over the springs. As it is sort of in the open, I hoped that evil fire left it alone. Alas, the metal pipe frame is still there but the roof, which was cedar shake, has burned away. Within just a minute or so of getting out of the truck we realized that there was one pair of swallows hanging in there by nesting under the small awning over the information sign, which did survive. This left us both with a bit of a bittersweet feeling as we watched the devoted parents busily working to keep the little one fed. I captured this frame as one of the pair lifted off a burned post that was adjacent to what was left of the gazebo as it headed to the nest to give the baby a morsel.
