Description
I found this rather interesting as the light faded on a January 2023 day from Dante’s View in Death Valley National Park. At first glance with my naked eye from over 5000 vertical feet above it, I thought it was water in the basin. However, once looking at it through a telephoto lens, I could see that it appears to have just been salt that was cleaner than the salt surrounding it. I assume this was due to ponding of water there not long before the photo was taken. Indeed, there was a great deal of flooding in the park in the summer of 2022. Perhaps this area dried up shortly before my visit. In any event, it made for an interesting visual effect as the late day sun reflected off the different colored salt.
