Description
The high desert of Lassen County California can be a stark place at times. The largely barren Skedaddle Mountains are a part of that landscape. However, while quite stark in summer, the area can take on a wonderful beauty on a cold winter morning after a dusting of snow – indeed the area rarely gets more than just a dusting. Add in the wonderful pastel colors the rising winter sun can create in the icy sky and it’s certainly worth getting out of bed for. Just be sure and bundle up as the 18 degrees Fahrenheit of this morning is on the balmy side for what it CAN be.
If one looks closely in the center of this frame 4 munitions storage bunkers can be seen. These are part of the Sierra Army Depot. This facility was built in 1942 as one of many for the purpose of keeping stored munitions well inland from the coast to safeguard them from Japanese attack. It is still quite active today.

I love the picture but sadly am not familiar with the area. I have to look it up, Mike. Simply because of course I wonder why it is still active even today. Lol. I promise I will try not to ask too many questions.
Mike Lee replied:
Thank you, Sabina! I don't know that much about the current mission of the depot but munitions storage is certainly still part of it. When I was a kid part of their mission was blowing up out dated stuff but I haven't heard any of those big booms in a number of years. 😁

Wow, what a stunning image, Mike! I love the colors in the sky, with the white snow of the mountain set against it! Would love to be there!

A gorgeous sunrise composition, Mike, I also enjoyed the historical background of this landscape!
